Bill Russel was born on February 12, 1934, in Monroe, Louisiana, United States. William Felton Russell (Bill Russell) was an extraordinary sportsman who played in the NBA  from 1956 to 1969.  

He was well known for intimidating defense, leadership, and winning strategies, as his team won every year he played. He won 11 NBA championships in the 13 seasons he played in the league, including in a row from 1959-1966. He also won the NCAA national championship with the University of San Francisco. 

Russell was celebrated as a strong champion for civil rights. He actively participated in the struggle against racial discrimination outside the court in the real world. He used his position to advocate for equality and social justice, becoming a powerful figure in basketball and society. He was also presented a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 by Barack Obama. 

After retiring, Russell momentarily served as a player-coach with the Celtics in the 1969-1970 season, becoming the NBA’s first African American coach. He went on to coach the Seattle SuperSonics and the Sacramento Kings.
