Tiny Tim, also known as Herbert Buckingham Khaury, was born on April 12, 1932, in Manhattan, New York City. A profound interest in music marked Tiny Tim’s early life.

At the age of five, his father gifted him a vintage wind-up Gramophone accompanied by a 78-RPM record playing the enchanting melody of “Beautiful Ohio” by Henry Burr. At the age of six, he started playing guitar.

In his pre-teen years, he developed a passion for records, especially those of the 1900s to the 1930s. Tiny Tim dedicated much of his leisure time to the New York Public Library, absorbing the rich history of the phonograph industry and its pioneers. 

He developed another passion for exploring sheet music and made photocopies for further study. This hobby persisted throughout his entire life.

Tiny Tim is renowned for hits like “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” and “Livin’ in the Sunlight, Lovin’ in the Moonlight,” which he sang in a falsetto voice.

Susan Marie Gardner played a crucial role as a supportive wife, standing by him as he pursued his musical dreams.

Tiny Tim’s Health and Tragedy:

The couple faced challenges, especially concerning Tiny Tim’s health. In 1996, Tiny Tim suffered a heart attack during a performance at a ukulele festival at the Montague Grange Hall in Montague, Massachusetts.

He was advised not to perform further due to his health, weight, and dietary needs, but Tiny Tim continued to perform, driven by his passion for music.

On November 30, 1996, Tiny Tim suffered a fatal heart attack on stage during a performance hosted by the Women’s Club of Minneapolis. His wife, Susan Marie Gardner, was by his side during these last moments.

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) administered CPR on-site and conveyed him to Hennepin County Medical Center. Despite multiple resuscitation attempts, he was declared dead at 11:20 pm. Tiny Tim is buried in a mausoleum situated in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Legacy and Remembrance:

Tiny Tim’s contributions to the music world were recognized with a star on the outside mural of the Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue. This accolade is considered one of the most prestigious in Minneapolis, highlighting the lasting impact of his musical legacy.

In Macquarie University Student Council, Australia, there is a significant mural featuring Tiny Tim decorated with tulip motifs. It is crafted by renowned Australian artist Martin Sharp.

Susan Marie Gardner passed away on July 3, 2013, in Heber Springs, Arkansas, at the age of 55. Her life, though relatively short, was marked by significant moments alongside Tiny Tim.
