Bob Verne passed away in 2001 at the age of 56 due to esophageal cancer. This left a deep impact on her daughter, Krista Vernoff.

Krista used her personal experience with his father’s battle with cancer in the narrative of this particular episode.

Just like in the series, Bob initially believed that he just had flu. However, the reality was much more severe.

Vernoff, just like the character Harold, reflected on her father’s positive attitude despite his diagnosis.

This episode captures many aspects of Verne’s final days including the issue with his breathing tube.

Despite her father’s deteriorating condition, the surgical team decided to proceed with the tumor-removal surgery.

Vernoff said, “The surgeon told us that my father met him behind our backs and begged him to proceed with the tumor removal surgery.”

Vernoff said, “There was pretty much no way for my father to recover from this brutal surgery, but the surgeon did it per my dad’s wish, and I’m yet to forgive that surgeon because he knew my dad would not make it.”

Vernoff felt like the character George did. She was really mad that they did the procedure because her dad asked for it. But unlike George, she didn’t show her anger openly.

She stated, “The scene where George yells at Bailey and Richard didn’t happen in my life.”

She further wrote, “Writing and shooting that scene was a wish fulfillment for me. What happened in my life is that we went into my Dad’s ICU, put our hands on his body, and sang Beatles songs while the nurses turned off the machines.

When they pulled the intubation tubes from his mouth, my sister and I put our faces to his mouth so we could feel the last of his breath. And then he died. And I became a member of the Dead Dad’s club.”

The episode explored the themes of loss, grief, and the enduring influence of a parent’s legacy.
